Organ Affinities: skin, respiratory system, digestive system, urinary system

Uses: As a vulnerary and astringent, plantain is well-known for its wound healing abilities and a go-to remedy for reducing bleeding and promoting the rapid closure of wounds (ensure wound is thoroughly cleaned before applying plantain).

Fresh plantain leaves can be chewed and applied as a poultice to insect bites and stings to reduce pain, swelling, and inflammation.

Use plantain in salves, poultices, liniments, compresses and other topical formulations for an effective remedy that soothes skin conditions such as rashes, eczema, and burns.

Internally, plantain helps clear mucus from the respiratory tract, making it useful in treating coughs, bronchitis, and other related issues. Its demulcent properties soothe irritated mucous membranes and also soothe irritation in the digestive tract.

The astringent action aids in treating diarrhea, and in combination with its vulnerary action, it can help heal internal wounds such as ulcers and gut lining perforations.  Plantain can also soothe irritation in the urinary tract due its mild diuretic action, making it suitable for urinary tract infections.

Preparation and Dosage:

Tisane (water infusion): 1-2 teaspoons of dried plantain leaves per cup of hot water. Steep 10-15 minutes. Drink 2-3 cups daily for internal support.

Poultice: crush or chew fresh leaves and apply directly to the skin for wounds, insect bites/stings, skin irritations.

Salve or Infused Oil: apply directly to skin to promote healing and reduce inflammation.

Tincture: take 2-3 mL of plantain tincture 2-3X/day for internal use.
